Anika Therapeutics produces a line of hyaluronic acid (HA) based ophthalmic viscoelastic products, including ANIKAVISC™, AMVISC®, AMVISC® Plus, OPTIVISC™ and STAARVISC™ II. Anika's viscoelastic solutions are used in most ophthalmic intraocular surgeries including cataract extraction, Intraocular Lens (IOL) insertion and removal, corneal surgery, glaucoma surgery, trauma surgery, posterior segment surgery, ocular plastic surgery and muscle surgery.
During ophthalmic procedures, it is vital to maintain normal eye shape and protect eye tissues. HA, a thick, transparent liquid similar to the natural fluid found in the eye is ideal for this task. It minimizes interaction between tissues and maintains eye fluid volume during surgery.
Cataract extraction and IOL implantation is the most common surgical procedure performed in the United States, and most other industrialized, affluent nations. In the U.S., one in six people over age 40 and more than half of people over age 80 have cataracts. Cataract surgical procedures are projected to grow significantly as a result of increases in population and aging demographics.
